It is best for those, who are not used to smoke, never to start smoking.
For those, who are used to smoke, there is a need to give a serious consideration to quit it.
*DISEASES-that are directly related to smoking or are result of smoking are as follows:-
1. Bronchogenic carcinoma
2. Emphysema
3. Buerger's disease
4. Asthma
5. Diabetes
6. Hypertension
7. Ischaemic heart diseases and lots of their cardiac complications
8. Ophthalmopathy (early cataract etc)
9. Cerebral vascular accidents
10. Grave's disease(a thyroid over activity)
11. Atherosclerosis and many more!
It is true that smoking does not affect every individual smokers in uniform fashion-this is due to different susceptibility criteria in different individual;this susceptibility is essentially the genetic susceptibility or predisposition. Still every one should ideally avoid smoking, because, everyone is hardly getting any chance to know how much genetic susceptibility to harmful effects of smoking is present there in one individual.
*Elements-that are present in tobacco smoke and causative of the above mentioned diseases are chiefly:-
1.Nicotine
2.Benzopyrin and other polycyclic organic carcinogenic hydrocarbon compounds present in the tar, that is produced owing to burning of tobacco leaves.
*Roles Of The Elements-
Nicotine in tobacco smoke is responsible for the physiological effects, for which a smoker smokes tobacco. It is mainly responsible for causing non neoplastic diseases with roots in smoking.
Polycyclic hydrocarbon compounds are present in tobacco smoke only to bring on dreaded malignant neoplastic diseases(cancers).
Smoking-Disease Relationship:-
Chances of acquiring diseases resulting from the tobacco smoking is directly proportional to amount (of tobacco leaf smoked) and duration (in years) of smoking. That is,the more the amount and/or the duration of smoking, the more the chance of acquiring smoking-induced diseases.
Once the smoking habit is given off for atleast 10 yrs, the chance of developing these diseases decreases considerably leaving little way to be anxious there after, if abstinence from smoking is maintained.
*Dependence on tobacco smoking is simply and mostly a psychological one, though physical components are also there. Hence it is not difficult to quit smoking oneself without taking help of other persons (doctors) or other materials and only using one's will-power!
A habitual smoker develops the typical habits and some silly associations. To make this clear, let us consider some common examples:-
Many persons are used to brush their teeth after meals and before going to bed at night; if,due to any cause, they can not brush their teeth, they feel awkward, this is am example of a good habit. Now the habituation to smoking is also some thing like that, with its harmful effects, when one is reluctant to have puffs of tobacco smoke just after completion of meals - this is just a habituation, i.e.smoking, because of liking to smoke (not due to obvious need to smoke).
Again, many people are used to cut nails by teeth in moments of deep or serious thoughts or problems- this is an example of association (it is also essentially a type of habit in fact) - cutting of nail by teeth has actually nothing to do with the seriousness of the thought or situation! Association of smoking is also something like that, when a smoker craves for tobacco smoke at the time of deep thought (as can classically be found in stories of Holmes and Felu da!), depression or tension (this behaviour may probably have some substance because of effects of nicotine on human nervous system in low dose and in the absense of habituation). After a person develops this type of association, he/she starts to use tobacco smoke indiscriminately in large amount as and when he/she faces such kind of situations without giving even a single thought to assess the gravity of the situation (This is as funny as an observation, where many people have seen at least a couple of students, who are habituated and dependant on carrying mini-notes for cheating/copying in examination hall regardless of the level of their studies and labour!)
*How-to quit smoking? It is so simple. Nothing but a strong determination is required to quit smoking!
# One mast determine not to inhale a single puff of tobacco smoke onwards in coming days and act accordingly continuously in future.
# One should be cautious to avoid any activity that may give rise to awkward situation. One may take help of dependable and near and dear persons in tackling awkward situations rather taking help of tobacco smoke.
*Responsibility-of other peoples of the family and society of a smoker can not be neglected in avoiding smoking. Not to offer smoking tobacco, helping tackle and behaving accordingly not giving rise to awkward situations etc are very simple but important does and don'ts among many of the important duties of the responsible persons of family and society.
Lastly it can be said, smoking's to be avoided.
It is easy to say than done. There is a friend of mine, he knows everything you wrote (he is a doctor) and I believe he also has a strong determination. Still, he cannot stay away from smoking even for an hour!
